Let’s Learn Korean!
Or in other words let’s learn Hangeul! This post will be a bit different from the other posts. We normally show you pretty photos that we have taken here in South Korea but this time we will talk about the Korean language.
HISTORY OF THE KOREAN LANGUAGE
The Korean language, also called Hangeul (한글) was invented by King Sejong from the Joseon dynasty in 1443.
Koreans at that time were having difficulty writing and reading in Chinese characters therefore King Sejong created this alphabet to make sure all Koreans could easily read and write.
His alphabet was a success and it is still being used today!
KOREAN ALPHABET
Hangeul is simple to understand and you will find that there is not that many characters to memorize.
Attached are charts to help you understand the alphabet.
VOWELS
CONSONANTS
King Sejong designed the consonants to imitate shapes. The five basic consonants (ㄱ,ㄴ,ㄷ,ㄹ,ㅁ) follow the shape of the speech organs as they make the sound.
Below are some charts to help you.
