If you’ve been cooped up indoors due to unfavorable weather, there’s nothing quite like a sunny day to ignite your wanderlust. Recently, we were blessed with such a day, and we seized the opportunity to embark on an unforgettable trip to Suwon. This charming city, located just 30 kilometers south of Seoul, has so much to offer, from being the current home to tech giant Samsung to hosting the last standing fortress from the illustrious Joseon Dynasty. Join us as we explore Suwon, a hidden gem in South Korea.
Hwaseong Fortress: A Walk Through Joseon Dynasty History
At the heart of Suwon stands the magnificent Hwaseong Fortress, a living testament to the glory of the Joseon Dynasty. This historical gem was commissioned by King Jeongjo, who dreamt of relocating the capital from Seoul to Suwon. In recognition of its cultural significance, UNESCO designated Hwaseong Fortress as a World Heritage site in the 1990s.
The fortress stretches for a little less than 6 kilometers, making it an easily manageable 2 to 3-hour walk. Along this impressive journey, you’ll encounter grand gates and picturesque pavilions. There are also historic towers that not only provide excellent photo opportunities but also offer a glimpse into Korean history. Our day at Hwaseong Fortress was a great blend of exploration and education. We immersed ourselves in the rich tapestry of Korean heritage. Afterward, we indulged in delectable dining options at the many restaurants and cafes that grace the vicinity.
Cost: Admission to Hwaseong Fortress is incredibly affordable, with a fee of 1,000 won for adults, 700 won for teenagers, and 500 won for children.
Hwahongmun Gate (Buksumun)
During your stroll along the fortress, you’ll stumble upon the enchanting Hwahongmun Gate. It is known for its seven arches designed to control water flow. This is an architectural marvel that sets it apart from the other gates within the fortress. Adjacent to the gate, you’ll find the Hwahongmun Center, a modern Korean traditional home brimming with valuable information to enhance your exploration.
While we were there, we had the privilege of witnessing a young couple capture their love story through enchanting wedding photos—a testament to the timeless beauty of the surroundings.
Flying Suwon: An Adventure in the Skies
For a dash of adventure, consider taking a ride in the Flying Suwon air balloon. This colossal balloon, measuring 32×22 meters, comfortably accommodates up to 20 passengers and soars to heights of up to 150 meters.
Cost: A ride in this breathtaking balloon lasts approximately 20 minutes and costs just 17,000 won (approximately $15).
Haenggung Palace: A Glimpse into Royal Life
Haenggung Palace, also known as Hwaseong Hwahongmun Palace, served as the royal residence during wartime events and various celebrations. This historic site has even graced the screens of popular Korean dramas like “Rooftop Prince” and “Moon Embracing the Sun.”
Suwon Places to Eat
As you approach Hwaseomun Gate, a delightful array of restaurants awaits you along the fortress. Suwon boasts numerous charming cafes and themed restaurants that cater to various tastes. During our visit, we dined at Farm to Hanok (팜투하녹), a delightful eatery offering paninis and salads for those craving a taste of the West.
